Muslims Need to Prove Theirs is a Religion of Peace

Islam is in need of a reformation, much like Christianity went through hundreds of years ago. We keep hearing from individual Muslims and multi-culturalists in this country how Islam is a religion of peace. In earnestness they will cite a verse from the Koran indicating how peaceful they are. And I’m sure they probably mean it. But those few who believe it apparently are impotent to change those of their religion who don’t. It’s time they start showing us they’re a religion of peace, and not just telling us!

Lt. General Thomas McInerney said in a recent interview, “Islam needs a reformation just like Christianity had plus they need a cultural renaissance to bring them into modernity. This must come from within driven by moderate Muslims.”

Dr. Tawfik Hamid’s book titled “The Roots of Jihad” describes our challenge with Muslim extremists. He wrote that Islamic Terrorism has the support of the majority of Muslims and that Islam must be reformed to become a religion of tolerance. Muslims are killing more of their own people than coalition forces in Iraq and Afghanistan are, and until the Muslim world acknowledges this and destroys this cancer from within there will be continued conflict that will continue to spread. This, he states, would be catastrophic for the Islamic religion.

The former President of Indonesia, Dr. Abdurrahman Wahid, wrote in an OP ED piece in the Wall Street Journal in December, “It is time for people of good will from every faith and nation to recognize that a terrible danger threatens humanity. We cannot afford to continue ‘business as usual’ in the face of this existential threat. Rather, we must set aside our international and partisan bickering, and join to confront the danger that lies before us.”
British Prime Minister Tony Blair in a July 4 testimony to a House of Commons committee agreed, stating, “Britain cannot defeat terrorism unless moderate Muslims do more to confront militancy in their own communities…Islam needs a reformation that must come from within.”

We must realize that tolerance toward Islam as a religion has nothing to do with the ideology of Islamic extremism. Islamo-Fascism has it’s theological roots in Islam the religion, but they comprise a sect within that goes far beyond what is reasonable in their interpretations of key scriptures in the Koran and the Hadith of Mohammed.

General McInerney in his interview said, “Islamic extremism is an ideology just like Fascism and Communism, and it must be fought in much the same way. The West has not acknowledged this and consequently we have not educated our population that it is an ideology rather than a religion. This is confusing people because of our tolerance for the diversity of religion.”

Since 9/11 Islamic terrorists have successfully carried out 5596 attacks world-wide. According to the CIA Guidebook, 95% of the conflicts in the world today have radical Muslims involved. What’s most amazing, is that Muslims are killing more fellow Muslims worldwide than they are infidels!

If the terrorist acts of the Islamic extremists are outside of the mainstream of Islam, why don’t the Imams condemn such acts? If you or I engaged in terrorist activities and we claimed it was because our religion taught us to, we would be denounced immediately by our ecclesiastical leaders. Yet when Islamic extremists engage in such activity and claim to be doing it for Allah, not only is there no condemnation, but they are actually praised, glorified, and considered martyrs for the cause.

Occasionally we glimpse tiny glimmers of hope for a reformation. On August 5, a top Saudi Sunni cleric, whose ideas inspired Osama bin Laden, issued a religious edict disavowing the Shi’ite guerrilla group Hezbollah. “The party of God,” (Hezbollah) is actually “the party of the devil,” said Sheik Safar al-Hawali. “Don’t pray for Hezbollah,” he said in the fatwa posted on his Web site. “It is not acceptable to support this rejectionist party, and one should not fall under its command, or pray for its victory.”

Granted, this fatwa may be promulgated for more secular reasons than religious. The Arab world disdains and fears Iran, and Hezbollah is the Iranian front in Lebanon, intent on eradicating Israelis from the region. But the fatwa does provide a glimmer of hope nonetheless.

If Islam is a religion of peace, the cry needs to be loud and strong from the faithful who believe thus, to reclaim their religion from terrorists. There need to be more Imams like Sheik Safar al-Hawali who have the courage to denounce terrorists. But they must go further. They must reform their educational curriculum as well that teaches primary school children the terrorist mentality. They need to take the reigns of their faith, denounce the 72 virgin myth for martyrs, expunge those who seek to murder and destroy, and start acting like a religion of peace.
